28 Insightful Journal Prompts To Start Your Day Right

Whenever I’m lucky enough to have a slow morning, I like to take some time to reflect before the chaos of the day leaves a mark on my memory. Truthfully, slow mornings are few and far between these days, but when I encounter them, I cherish them like a treasure that’s best guarded lest they be stolen. On those mornings when I get to catch my breath, one of the first things I like to do is pick up my journal from my bedside table and turn spontaneous words into sentences. At times, I start with a journal prompt; other times, I just let the words flow, baring it all on the page.

There are days when writing comes easy. Like they were on the wet ink of my black pen even before I picked it up. Almost like those words were dying to be written, and all I had to do was pick up the pen to draw words already designed. On some mornings, though, the ink in my pen runs dry, and the words don’t quite sit on the tip. I find myself ready to give myself to the art of journaling, but the words don’t find me.
On days like that, I rely on journaling prompts to put me on the right track – a quiet journey to finding my voice on paper again.

What Are Journal Prompts?

I like to think of journal prompts as ‘helpers’ when journaling. As a writer, I know words don’t always flow easily. Sometimes, the whiteness of a blank page can be so intimidating it leaves you scrambling for the right words. The right way to express how you’re feeling. The perfect way to start a sentence. Or even the right topic to write about. There can be too many laces that need untangling and figuring out which to start with can be petrifying.

Using a journal prompt takes away the pressure when faced with a blank page. Journal prompts are specific and direct questions or sentences that inspire you to write. They give you a focus and direction and allow you to do the most important part of any habitual practice – start.
