Best Skincare Tips For Better Skin I Wish I Knew Sooner

Nowadays, it feels like everyone is a skincare guru. It only takes a few minutes scrolling through TikTok to discover yet another 9-year-old raving about the best skincare products for anti-ageing they got at Sephora. And it takes even less time to stumble on the page of the 20-something-year-olds breaking down their latest Botox procedures. Undoubtedly, it seems more than ever we are all a little obsessed about slowing down the process of getting older, aren’t we?

When it came to developing a good skincare routine, I was definitely a late bloomer. I was lucky enough to be blessed with fairly unproblematic skin growing up which meant my skin was easy to manage. However, this also meant it took me longer to realise I needed a good skincare routine to keep it that way. My 20s brought me many things, including responsibilities, stress, growing pains and, of course, acne.

Feeding my urge to learn more about skincare wasn’t difficult at that point, however, there are some skincare tips I wish I knew sooner. Approaching skincare for the first time can be a daunting experience. I’m certainly still learning much to this day, but there are ways to simplify the learning process and steps that are vital to a good skincare routine.

These are the best skincare tips I wish I knew sooner:

No One Size Fits All.

One of the reasons I procrastinated to take skincare seriously sooner, was the overwhelming amount of information that was out there. There were too many tutorials to watch, too many new words I had to learn the meaning of, and too many so-called ‘experts’ in the already saturated skincare industry.

If you’re searching for the ‘magical’ solution to your skincare issues, you won’t find them in one go.

I had to take the time to learn what each step or ingredient was for and why it did or didn’t belong on my skin. I needed to learn to filter the voices of ‘real’ experts out there and mute the rest.

Even more essential, I had to realise that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to skincare. Skin types vary, and what worked wonders for a certain beauty influencer might not work for you and that’s okay. You just have to find your fit.

Wear Sunscreen – Always.

When I think about the fact I never used to wear sunscreen as a teen, even during the hottest Italian summers when I lived there, I almost shed a tear in disappointment at my younger self.

I guess I just never deemed it a necessity and fell for the common myth that black skin doesn’t require sunscreen. However, just because sun damage isn’t visible to the eye, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Consider me fully reformed because applying sunscreen as the last step of my skincare routine is a must. Regardless of the weather, or what day of the week it is, I apply a sun cream of choice generously. You will never catch me slacking on that!

Introduce New Skincare Products Slowly.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made with skincare in past was implementing different new products into my skincare routine at once. Crazy, right? This would often happen whenever I discovered new skincare essentials and ordered them right to my doorstep.

Excitement, eagerness, and blind enthusiasm were often the reason why I’d rush to try them all in a hurry. That rarely worked out for me.

Instead, I’d recommend introducing new skincare products to an already established routine slowly.

By doing this, you allow your skin the time to adjust to the new product. Also, if your skin flares up, it’s much easier to identify the cause of an unwanted reaction.

Less Is More.

While I firmly believe, that no one skincare product is a perfect fit for everyone, I’m also of the opinion that when it comes to what goes on my skin, less is more.

Personally, I’ve found my skin tends to react badly when I pack too many products onto it. For this reason, I try to ensure I’m using products that are targeting my skin’s main concerns. While some swear by their 12-step routines, I’d rather half that.

When it comes to finding the best skincare tips for better skin, many more deserve to be highlighted. Maybe I’ll do a part two…?
If you are having major concerns about your skin, I’d highly recommend going to see a certified specialist about them. If you can afford it, that would for sure be my top tip.
