Jimmy’s Killer Prawns | Restaurant Review

|

Sometimes, you think your day will go one way, but unexpectedly it doesn’t. In the case of my very first visit to Jimmy’s Killer Prawns restaurant, my day turned out different than I expected.
I woke up to a “What are you up to today?” text from my very good friend Jenni. She followed up by suggesting we do something fun that evening. Fast forward to a few moments later, she had somehow convinced me to spend my night eating at Jimmy’s Killer Prawns.
Before her text that morning, I had never even heard of Jimmy’s Killer Prawns restaurant, and since I’m not one to say no to good food, my answer was a simple yes.

It only took me a quick web search to discover that the first Jimmy Killer Prawns opened in June 1991 after its founder “literally” dreamt of a prawn platter. No joke!
Now you can find branches in South Africa, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia and more. In England, there are two Jimmy Killer Prawn restaurants – one in Leicester and another in Manchester. We booked a table for three people over the phone and waited impatiently for the clock to run forward.
Was I smiling at the end of the night, or did I regret not picking a different restaurant? Here’s my honest review of Jimmy’s Killer Prawns in Manchester.

Inside Jimmy’s Killer Prawns Restaurant.

Before we even got inside the restaurant, one thing was very obvious. The restaurant was packed with people standing in front of the glass doors. We pushed the doors open and had to squeeze through strangers waiting to be called to a table. Some transportation issues had caused us to run late but about 15 minutes, and when we called the restaurant to advise of this, they informed us they wouldn’t be able to hold our table.

Entering the restaurant, it was clear why.

We caught up and chatted away by the door as more people squeezed in and after about 15 minutes we were led to our table.

The restaurant had a warm vibe thanks to its simple set-up and bright ceiling-hanging lights. There was nothing fancy about the aesthetics at our booths either and the only things on our table were a paper menu and utensils.

The Dishes at Jimmy’s Killer Prawns.

As a first-timer at Jimmy’s Killer Prawns, knowing what to get wasn’t easy. Frankly, I gravitated towards many items on the menu like the Grilled Crabs, Lobster Thermidor or the ‘Killer Burgers’. We ended up getting items we could share and perhaps chose the safest option we were sure we’d enjoy. These are some of the things we picked off the menu:

2 Calamari rings

Platter for 3 + Sides
Jimmy’s Rice
Chips

Passion Mojito
Jimmy Tini
Minty Mango

Fanta
Water

Following my friend’s recommendation, we requested extra sauce in our prawns. Ask and you shall receive, right? As a result, the prawns were tasty and extra juicy when dipped into the sauce. The platter for 3 comes with 54 pieces of prawns and two sides. We added an extra side to our order as well. The chips and calamari also hit the right spot and left me craving more. Jimmy’s rice, however, was not the signature dish I thought it would be. Personally, I thought it had a bit of a bland taste and wouldn’t be something I’d order ever again.

Except for the rice, which was not a favourite at our table, overall, the meals did not disappoint.

Jimmy’s Killer Prawns doesn’t serve alcoholic beverages. Instead, they offer a range of classic soft drinks and mocktails too. I chose the Passion Fruit mojito which I loved!

The Service at The Restaurant.

Despite being super busy, the service the restaurant staff offered to us was exceptional. We didn’t wait too long to place our order or to get our food at the table. The whole atmosphere was relaxed and family-friendly too.

In addition, the staff member who waited on us was very friendly and we ended up having a lovely conversation at the end of the night.

Jimmy Killer Prawns Manchester is definitely worth visiting and we are already planning our next meet-up there!
